My first chapter focuses on the writer Jean Rhys. She is best known for her prequel to Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea. I am writing about two earlier novels, Quartet and Voyage in the Dark.

Laur, if you want a little diversion, but still feel like you're doing research, you should read the book Difficult Women by David Plante. It's a memoir of his friendships with three women (Rhys, Germaine Greer, and Sonia Orwell). The whole thing is pretty great, but the best part is the Rhys section.
Hey Sara: You are always so great with the book recommendations! And I just found your NYRB blog! I actually did read this book; it was the first thing I picked up after I decided to start with Rhys. Plante is so gossipy. His story of Rhys falling in the toilet was hysterical and super sad - I reconsidered my choice of subject after reading it. Who wants to write about a crazy angry drunk old lady? And then I thought, wait, that's exactly what I want to do. The title of the blog actually comes from this book. BTW, I first read Rhys with you in the Columbia class!
"There are only two types of dissertations: Done and Not Done."
Feeding the Lake
"All of writing is like a huge lake. There are great rivers that feed the lake, like Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. And there are trickles, like Jean Rhys. All that matters is feeding the lake. I don't matter. The lake matters. You must keep feeding the lake. It is very important. Nothing else is important." Jean Rhys
Disseration Topic
It's complicated. And a constant work in progress. I also feel very protective of it. It's something about how changes in photography influenced writing in the 1920s and 1930s. If you want to know more, we can discuss in person.
