Hm, reading this quote after your post on narcissism is interesting. I wonder if Wolfe's anti-publicity is a sort of narcissism in itself, the desire to efface oneself as a form of self-complimenting...?

Also, another idea for your blog: search for others keeping blogs about/during their dissertation process and create a list of links...
